With the recent boom in boating activity, recreating responsibly is of the utmost importance. Boating safety is always crucial, but with the current state of the world due to coronavirus, many boaters are wondering how to navigate these uncharted waters from local boating restrictions to social distancing. With the spikes going down then up every other week, we have decided to provide a few tips to remind everyone on how to stay safe out on the water!
Before You Go
Local and state COVID-19 guidelines continues to change daily so some places you may visit could suddenly close down. Check the status of your must-visit locations before you leave.
Social Distance
Boat solely with household members and stay six feet apart while fueling your boat or at a launch ramp. Some marinas may limit the number of people allowed inside stores and offices at one time so read all listed policies on the door before entering. If a boating location is too packed, make sure you have a plan B.
Cover Up
Several places such as restaurants, shops and marinas are requiring face masks so keep some handy onboard. Buffs and bandannas will work in a pinch as well.
No Rafting Up
It is unwise and risky during a pandemic to tie your boat up with another. Also, try to avoid beaching up with several other people. Consider cruising with one or two boats while everyone stays on their respected vessel.
Tiddy Up
Keep the water clean by respecting it and ensure your masks do not fly overboard. Do not leave your face coverings at the marina for them to dispose of either. We want to keep our oceans and other people safe.
Disinfect Everything
Whether it’s your hands after touching anything at the marina or the fueling station to cleaning your boat with the proper EPA-approved disinfectants that are safe for your boat, you must disinfect everything for safety purposes. Give your hands and your boat a thorough washing before packing it up for the day!
