Gear can make or break a fishing trip. It’s the difference between how much you catch and what you catch (being a skilled angler will also do that, but that’s a topic for another time). If you’re serious about fishing, the more you’ll appreciate having quality gear. And if you’re in the marketing for a new fishing boat, you need to start thinking seriously about what gear you want outfitted to meet your standards.
We have several fishing boats located at our Charleston dealership from the Robalo R246 Cayman to the EdgeWater 320CC. Fishing boats have several accessories that you will find you will often need and we’ve listed a few below!
Fishfinder Transducer
This is an instrument that helps to identify where fish are in the water column. The transducer sends sonar waves down into the water. When the sonar hits something, it estimates the size and depth of the object and send the information back to the display. Older models only show what fish are in an area, while newer models can give you an approximation of the size and number of fish near you.
Rod Holders
It’s helpful to carry multiple rods on your boat whether you’re fishing with a lot of people or you just like to have options. A rod rack or rod holders make this possible. These holders are especially nice if you’re planning a fishing trip in an area where there are multiple types of fish that require a different size rod, reel and tackle.
Livewell
This is essentially an onboard fish tank that helps keep fish or bait alive. They are filled with seawater or fresh water depending on where you are fishing. They often come with pumps to keep the water circulating and fresh and are insulated to keep the water temperatures consistent. If you have any questions on how to operate your livewell, you can watch our how-to video here!
Depth Finder
A depth finder is similar to a fishfinder since it helps you see what’s happening under the boat. It generally only shows the lay of the seafloor and is a little easier to use. Some models are a two-in-one device that shows the seafloor and the fish in the water above it.
Trolling Motor
This is a small independent motor that attaches to your boat and is made for making small position changes. These engines are often electric and the propellers are smaller than the boat’s main engine prop. They are extremely helpful when it comes to fishing because it can help you turn the boat to face the correct direction when you’re pulling in a fish. It’s also helpful on lakes and rivers to make small adjustments to navigate obstacles.
Knife and Plier Holder
Many situations require a knife or a set of pliers on hand, but when you’re in marine conditions it can sometimes be dangerous to handle these tools. This holder is a case that is mounted to the wall of the hull or another location of the boat to keep your tools safely secure and easily readable when needed.
Fishing Lights
Not enough sun in the day for fishing? No problem! Whether you hit the water in the early morning or hang out after the sun is dipping, fishing lights allow you to see what you’re trying to catch. Some lights are mounted to the boat’s T-Top or tower while others are mounted on the underside of the boat to illuminate the water.
