If you’re anything like me, your dog is a member of your family and at some point, you’ll want to take him or her out on your new boat. A lot of dogs are fans of the water, but boating with a furry friend has some hazards and tips are always useful on how to safely take your pup along on your boating trip.
It’s always safe to assume that your dog will end up in the water at some point. Some dogs love to swim, but not all are suited for boating. Smaller dogs won’t be able to stay afloat or battle big waves, while older dogs or ones with health problems may have difficulty swimming due to obesity or arthritis. Be wary of how your dog handles the water and make accommodations by anticipating their needs.
Anticipating what they will need is key and bringing supplies will reduce your dog’s stress. Allow your dog to use the bathroom before getting on the boat and be forgiving if an accident occurs. Also, keep in mind that dogs can get seasick too! Try to give them small treats before providing them with a full meal to ensure it settles in their stomachs without incident. Chew toys and treats are always a great distraction and can reinforce good behavior as well. Some dogs love the water a little too much, so try coaxing your furry friend to get back in the boat by using one of these! The most important thing to bring on the boat is a life jacket for your dog, even if they’re a competent swimmer. Safety is the most important thing!
Sometimes you’re on a mission to fish and that’s great, but consider if your dog will be good to have around when you go. Many dogs aren’t particularly well-suited for these types of trips. They can be excitable and bark loudly, scaring away your catch or they can bite the fish right off the line when you bring it in. Having your dog steal your fish is the least of your worries though. It could easily get hooked when you cast or get into the bait supplies. Really ask yourself if this is the time when your dog should join you.
