Spring has sprung, which means you’re pumped to get out on the water as soon as possible! But there’s one problem…your boat’s been languishing in storage through the winter. She’s going to require some slight inspection and a few tune-ups before she’s seaworthy. De-winterizing your boat doesn’t have to be a pain if you follow these quick tips!
1. Initial Inspection
Check the condition of your boat for anything that you may have missed in the fall or minor issues that could have occurred throughout the wintertime. Look at the boat cover for rips or tears that may need repairing, open the hatches to inspect for mold and check the cushions and carpet for mildew. Make sure the console and the hull do not have any cracks or leaks that you didn’t see before and if any water buildup has been found, drain it immediately to prevent any potential damage issues.
2. Engine Check
If the engine doesn’t work, you’re not going anywhere plain and simple. Take a look at your engine whether it’s an outboard or inboard motor. Check your coolant and oil levels, then top them off if need be. Look for any leaks around the engine head or gaskets and insure your spark plugs are functioning while lacking any corrosion.
3. Test Equipment
Gather all of your electronics together such as your GPS or fish finder and test each of their batteries to know which/if any need replacing. Check your safety equipment as well like your fire extinguisher and flashlights to make sure everything is up to date.
4. Get It Ready
Your boat has been sitting for a few months now so it’s time to spruce things up! Get to sweepin’ and check the nooks for winter debris or critter nests in cozy pockets. Get the helm shinning and polish the chrome to get it glistening in the sun. Don’t forget to update your first aid kit and life jackets/flotation devices. Do you have all of your flares and a functioning radio? Good, we’re making progress.
